(10 ago. 1878, Stettin, actual Szczecin, Polonia–26 jun. 1957, Emmendingen, cerca de Friburgo de Brisgovia, Alemania Occidental).

Novelista y ensayista alemán. Estudió medicina en las universidades de Berlín y Friburgo y se especializó en psiquiatría. Su primera obra, Los tres saltos de Wang-Lun (1915), describe el sofocamiento de una rebelión en China. Su obra más conocida, Berlin Alexanderplatz (1929; versión cinematográfica, 1931; versión televisiva, 1980), escrita al modo expresionista, dramatiza los sufrimientos de la clase trabajadora en un orden social que se desintegra. Sus ancestros judíos y su militancia socialista lo forzaron a abandonar Alemania cuando los nazis asumieron el poder; entonces huyó a Francia (1933) y luego a EE.UU. (1940), reinstalándose en París a principios de la década de 1950.
